Educational Visits TEACHERS! Please click here to download the educational group booking form, complete it and return it to us. Thanks
The Rothiemurchus Ranger Service can offer educational groups an exciting range of days out. Each tour can be tailored to your group’s particular needs and requirements and we can make them as formal or fun as you wish.

Each tour may last from 3 hours to a whole day, dependent on both your and our availability. Tours may run throughout the year, however we recommend April to October as the best months.

Food from the land Food from the land
The group will hear about the changing story of agriculture in the Highlands. Here at Rothiemurchus the emphasis has changed from predominantly beef farming to mixed farming combined with the expansion of native woodlands. In time this will create more diverse habitats, in harmony with the overall aims for the estate.

Dell Farm Dell Farm
A visit to the highland cattle herd will be made with information given on the breed, its history and how they are farmed. Also explanations of why the farm is situated where it is etc.

Fish Farm Fish Farm
A prime example of commercial fish production combined with recreation and conservation. Visit the working fish farm; feed the rainbow trout; see the fishing loch, which is a haven for bird life and has played an important role in the re-establishment of the Osprey in Badenoch and Strathspey.

Deer Farm Deer Farm
This visit offers the opportunity to see red deer at close quarters. Rothiemurchus has a working deer farm producing venison to supply our farm shop and other outlets. Learn about the life-cycle of deer, their role in the economy of the Highlands and the need to manage red deer and the role this plays in the conservation of the native pine forest habitat.

The Living Landscape The Living Landscape
This visit investigates how the land has been affected by people over many years, through finding evidence of human activity and comparing past and present land uses. For over 2,500 years Rothiemurchus has been a living and working environment. The colonisation of the area by humans following the last ice age began the story of people in the landscape that has continued to present day.

Exploring the Pinewood Habitat Exploring the Pinewood Habitat
The habitats of Rothiemurchus support a great diversity of plant and animal life. Mountain, moorland, forest and farmland each hold their own variety of species which favour the conditions in these areas. The native pinewoods of Rothiemurchus are among the best remnants left in Scotland of the ancient Caledonian forest. During this visit the group will explore the relationships of different species in the pinewood habitat by hands on activities, research methods and fun activities.

Land Use Study Land Use Study
The land use management study allows groups the opportunity to look at the diversification of land uses on Rothiemurchus Estate. This includes traditional farming, deer farming, fish farming, forestry, recreation, conservation and deer stalking; how they work, how they interact and the physical, economic and political factors which influence them. The tour can be given for any level of secondary study.

Land Use Management Land Use Management
This tour is aimed at students in higher or further education. It deals with management issues involved in a diversified highland estate, which contains some of the most important wild areas in the country together with high visitor appeal. The content of the visit is totally flexible in order that it can be of the most benefit to your students. Because of this it is important that you give some idea of your requirements on the booking form.
