Because Rothiemurchus includes habitat for many rare species, traces of how people have made their living since the bronze age and has a landscape that is very popular for recreation everything that grows and everything that lives on Rothiemurchus is very special; the value of the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
We take care to monitor indicator species, as there are incredibly wide and diverse ranges of rare habitats on the Estate. From the 10,000-year-old natural forest to the Golden Eagles high in the mountains, otter in the rivers and lochs and oystercatcher and ringed plover on the low flood plains, everything is special.
Being such a varied environment, Rothiemurchus is also home to many rare species such as the Capercaillie, which is the largest member of Grouse family or indeed the dainty Twin Flower which can be found in our Scots Pine Woodland.With over 125 species of birds, 27 species of mammal and 400 species of flowers there are so many exciting discoveries to be made.
