BIG FISH Event raises over £33,000 for Charity

On the 12th June Rothiemurchus Fishery hosted the annual Big Fish competition in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Rothiemurchus was one of a number of fisheries throughout Scotland and Northern Ireland who helped raise over £33,000 for the care of people suffering from cancer.

29 competitors fished the Large Loch, in the quest to catch a tagged fish and net themselves a £500 prize!  Ten tagged fish were caught throughout Scotland and Northern Ireland and everyone involved had a great day of fishing.  Well done to all who took part!

Ospreys return to Rothiemurchus

The Ospreys return!

The first Osprey of the season was spotted by visitors at the Fishery on  26th March. This sighting was confirmed by Fishery staff today as it hunted for trout to refuel itself after its long migration from West Africa to its breeding grounds here in the Highlands of Scotland.

This particular bird has not yet been identified, but it was seen flying in from the west and we suspect it's the Kinrara Osprey, (ring- blue xe). If you want to read about how the Rothiemurchus Osprey is tracked click here

These magnificant birds will be seen more frequently at the fishery over spring and summer - an exciting time for all to see this magnificant bird diving into the fresh fishery lochs.

Rothiemurchus venison wins more fans!

Rothiemurchus venison is continuing to win fans, this time it’s the renowned food critic for the Sunday Herald, Joanna Blythman.

In a recent review of The Cross Restaurant in Kingussie, renowned food critic for the Sunday Herald, Joanna Blythman gave Rothiemurchus venison a very special mention. She wrote:

‘The word tender doesn’t do it justice. The loin of Roe deer from Rothiemurchus estate had all the flavour you get from a beast that forages in woods and glens’

At Rothiemurchus we are passionate about delicious food and we think you can ‘taste’ the care that is put into each stage of bringing food from the forest or hill to the plate. Peter Ferguson, our Head Stalker, ensures that our deer live a peaceful, healthy life grazing the sweet grasses of our forests and hills, unaware that there is human activity close by. Over the last 20 years Rothiemurchus has gained a reputation as the finest venison and was chosen by Rick Stein and the BBC when they celebrated Food Heroes. We’ve always known we had something really special with our succulent, tender, fresh wild venison but now others are spreading the word too.

You can buy your venison now at Rothiemurchus Farm Shop or by telephone - click here to access our mail order list and see the telephone number.

Winter Wildlife News

Although many think Winter is a quiet time of year on the wildlife front, for the birds and animals of Rothiemurchus  it is a time of ultimate survival and working together.

Whilst exploring the Rothiemurchus ancient woodlands you will come across noisy flocks of Chaffinch, Coal tits, Greenfinch, Siskin, Greenfinch & Crested tit.  They work tirelessly together searching for food which is now limited, using safety is numbers to keep a beady eye out for predators, such as sparrowhawks, and snuggling closely together when roosting to preserve heat precious.

Red deer can also be spotted when the cold northerly winter winds drive them down off of the hillsides to the shelter of the woodlands. Roe deer can often be spotted early morning or late afternoon grazing in the open farmland.

Winter wildlife spotting is its most rewarding when a blanket of snow covers the forest floor.  An early morning visit can be rewarded with the spotting of many mysterious footprints in the snow.  You can see how alive the forests are with pine martens, badgers, deer, foxes and occasionally the odd possible wildcat leaving its snowy mark – you will be amazed.

So wrap up warm and come along into the Rothiemurchus woodlands at this magical time of year.

The Ranger Service on Rothiemurchus is pleased to be of service to those who wish to explore and know more about the flora and fauna.
